He didn't study the trades. He spent 20 years inside them.

Tom Atkinson is the founder of Trades Alignment and the reason this firm exists is simple: he spent two decades watching good businesses bleed from a problem nobody had the tools to fix.

Tom's career didn't start in an office. It started in the U.S. Army, where he served as a petroleum supply specialist and cable systems technician, including a deployment to Kuwait. The military gave him something that would define everything that came after: a deep respect for structure, accountability, and the kind of operational clarity that keeps complex systems from falling apart.

When he left the service, Tom moved into the trades. He spent seven years with an Albuquerque contractor, working his way from the field to project manager and earning his RCDD certification along the way. It was hands-on, detail-driven work. The kind that teaches you things no classroom can.

In the years that followed, Tom co-founded and co-managed a special systems contracting firm alongside a business partner — fire alarm, AV, network cabling, and camera systems for schools, hospitals, and government facilities across the region. For eleven years, he helped build and run that business from the inside, responsible for everything from project delivery to financial oversight to the daily decisions that made the business stronger.

It was during those years that Tom first saw the pattern clearly: a business could be busy, growing, and winning work yet still be losing ground financially. Not because of bad craftsmanship or poor customer relationships. But because the numbers being used to measure success were leaving out the most important part of the story.

Tom co-managed that firm through growth, complexity, and eventually a successful sale in 2024. After the sale, Tom completed his bachelor's degree in Entrepreneurial Studies and his MBA, not to learn theory, but to build the academic foundation behind what he’s already lived.

Trades Alignment is what came next.

Why this work matters

This is about more than helping contractors make a little more money. It's about what happens to the people who helped build something.

Tom has watched talented, hardworking contractors spend the best years of their career building a business that never fully paid them back. Nobody ever showed them where the money was actually going and the standard tools they were given to run their business weren't built to answer that question.

The goal of Trades Alignment isn't growth for its own sake. It's about durability. It's about helping an owner build something that creates true wealth for themselves, for their employees, and for whatever comes next. Whether that's a sale, a succession, or a legacy handed down.

Selective excellence isn't a tagline. It's the operating principle: do fewer things, do them profitably, and build something that lasts long enough to matter.

The ideas behind the work is now in print

Tom has put the core philosophy of Trades Alignment into a book, written for the contractor who's tired of working harder for the same result and wants a clear-eyed look at why that's happening and what to do about it.

A guide for self-performing trade contractors who are ready to stop guessing and start building with real financial clarity.
